A streamlined, real-time strategy game that works very well. The original Kohan was released to little fanfare during early 2001. If it wasn’t for the “II” in the title, I would suspect that most gamers wouldn’t know Kings of War is a sequel. As such, Kohan II faces stiff competition in the brand- driven RTS genre, but fans shouldn’t worry too much as the actual gameplay is right up there with the best of the genre.

In Kohan II: Kings of War, you lead Naava Daishan and Jonas Teramun against the forces of Sebak and other Ceyah members, who barely survived the aftermath of the first Kohan game. The story sort-of explains why you’re doing all of this battling, but isn’t particularly memorable. Kohan II allows you to pick from numerous races and then you can align this race to a particular faction, to give you further customization. Each race has different battle units and varied economic differences.

Most RTS games have you collecting numerous resources which you’ll then use to build the game’s units and structures and all that good stuff. In Kohan II, you’ll primarily be involved with collecting gold which you’ll get by exchanging other resources into it. You’ll build structures to gather mana, iron, wood and stone but you don’t actually use them as much as you’ll then use the additional resources for more gold. All in all, the system works rather well although it isn’t anywhere near as shallow as it would seem on first sight.

As in most RTS, cities are the primary location per map. Here, you’ll have buildings that gather the resources and your troops can retreat to. To capture a city, you’ll need to destroy the main fortress; although the buildings in the city will take some hits away from the citadel should you attempt to only target it. Unlike other RTS, you can’t build a city wherever you want which forces you to be strategic about your cities. Additionally, you can build forts to protect your mines.

Battle in Kohan II is quite enjoyable. Instead of micromanaging each individual unit, you’ll group them into companies. These companies grow and get stronger as they are used, so you’ll have reason to make sure at least one member survive. These groups include a number of units in different positions, and formations. You can mix and match different units in the game’s various positions – six main units, two additional units for support and a team leader – to get the most effective strategy. You can also use heroes in the game, which will protect your other units and give them the best leadership. Like the other units, these heroes grow and get stronger, but if they die will start from scratch.

The game allows you to change the formation of your companies to best suit you. The formations differ in willingness to fight, fighting ability and speed, so you’ll need to decide which is most important at a particular time. Of course, if you think that you’re about to lose it is always best to retreat. While retreating the units move very fast and are healed when they return to the town. Be warned that enemy troops know this as well and will do their best to make sure they survive.

Kohan II gives you a good bang for your buck. The game includes a scenario editor, as well as a quick battle mode, with quite challenging AI. The game’s single player consists of 25 missions and although the length varies depending on skill level, average gamers should get through it in twenty or so hours. Additionally, the game includes a rather robust multiplayer mode with many selectable features. You can also opt for a team battle, which adds additional depth to the already frenzied battles.

The game’s visuals are pleasant as a whole. The environments are large and full of detail, and the same could be said for the game’s fully 3D units who animate very splendidly. Best of all, you’ll see a good number of enemies on screen at one time. Particle effects are used quite a bit and look good, as a whole. The only disappointing bit is the rather low-production cutscenes.

The game’s audio is reasonably good with good sound effects. The voice acting in the game is also quite strong. The game's background isn't bad either.

TimeGate Studios’ Kohan II: Kings of War is a very solid RTS with enough changes to invigorate even the most phased RTS fan.
